Short-term Deal Ends Shutdown

Republicans’ Opportunity: Take Full Credit for Immigration Solutions

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congress is moving this afternoon toward passage of a continuing resolution that will reopen the government through Feb. 8.

The following is a statement from Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum:

“Republicans have an opportunity now to take the lead and take full credit for immigration solutions the vast majority of Americans want.

“In order to take advantage of their opportunity, Republican leadership must do three things: Separate themselves from the extreme fringe of their party, create a bipartisan coalition and act with urgency.

“In these 17 days, Republicans must lead Congress to a solution for Dreamers. Republicans and Democrats in both houses want a solution, and so do their voters. Bipartisan options already are on the table. A strong, clean, bipartisan bill can keep our country secure and offer a solution for hundreds of thousands of contributing Dreamers.

“Republicans should recognize and seize their chance to make history on this issue.”
