WASHINGTON, D.C. — On a 77-19 vote, the Senate has just confirmed Kevin McAleenan as commissioner of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

McAleenan has served as acting commissioner since Jan. 20, 2017.

The following is a statement by Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum:

“We look forward to continuing to work with CBP and Commissioner McAleenan. We recognize CBP’s challenges and appreciate officers’ hard work.

“The commissioner will continue to have his work cut out for him. CBP must prioritize serious security threats and allow people to cross Border Patrol checkpoints for humanitarian reasons. The commissioner should ensure that officers respect and stay away from sensitive sites such as churches and schools, and prioritize resources on the border itself, including at ports of entry.”
