What’s the Plan for Separated Children?
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A day after President Trump issued an executive order in response to family separation, serious questions have arisen about its implementation and what happens next.
“More than 2,000 children remain separated from their parents, and it’s clear today that government agencies have no plan for reuniting them or for implementing the president’s order,” said Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum, who published a Washington Post op-ed this morning on family separation and next steps. “The government needs to make and implement a plan immediately to reunite these families.
“The executive order raises more questions than it answers, and we need answers. The bottom line is that we cannot separate kids from their parents, we must reunite those that have been separated, and we must not detain families in jail. Families in jail means children in jail.
“Alternatives to detention have proved extremely effective and are better for immigrant families and American taxpayers.”
