Washington, D.C. — Forty years ago, President Ronald Reagan signed into law the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
After decades of inaction, this week’s election results make clear that Americans want change and are demanding accountability and solutions on immigration.
“The newly elected Congress and the administration have a unique opportunity to work together and address the urgent need for fair, firm and compassionate immigration policies,” said Jennie Murray, President and CEO of the Forum. “After four decades of limited action, modernizing our immigration system is long overdue.
“Americans consistently express the need for balanced solutions, yet a significant gap remains between what the public wants and what Congress and successive administrations have delivered.
“We urge current and incoming legislators to take the president at his word and work across the aisle to find common ground on immigration. America needs secure borders, but it also needs legal work visa programs that help meet the needs of U.S. employers, bipartisan solutions for Dreamers, and policies that preserve our nation’s long tradition of offering refuge to those fleeing persecution.”
