A Solution for Dreamers is the Answer

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Without passage of a spending bill or a continuing resolution, the government shut down at midnight.

The following is a statement by Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum:

“No one wanted a shutdown, but now Republicans and Democrats have no choice but to negotiate a solution. It’s time for Congress and the White House to lead from the front, listen to voters and put public opinion — and the economy — above base politics.

“Leaders must reopen the government, agree to a practical solution addressing Dreamers and add capacity to make sure our borders are secure.

“Americans are waiting. A vast majority support the kinds of practical, bipartisan solutions that are already on the table in Congress.

“Republicans have an opportunity to take the lead and take full credit for solutions that will benefit American workers, allow Dreamers to contribute fully and boost our security.”
