Washington, D.C. — Republican and Democratic legislators led by Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-Pennsylvania) have reintroduced a bill that would help address workforce needs in key nonagricultural job sectors by creating a new “H-2C” nonimmigrant visa.
H.R. 4959 is identical to the original Essential Workers for Economic Advancement Act introduced in 2023. The new bill is co-sponsored by six other Republicans and three Democrats.
“The reintroduction of the Essential Workers for Economic Advancement Act is encouraging. It is a thoughtful collaboration that demonstrates a shared commitment to building a stronger and more effective immigration system,” said Jennie Murray, president and CEO of the National Immigration Forum.
“This bipartisan effort is a hopeful sign that would be an important first step in fixing our legal immigration system, benefiting all Americans. We need thoughtful legislation that strengthens our economy and empowers all to thrive.”
