Washington, D.C. — As the expiration of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador approaches, the following is a statement from Jennie Murray, President and CEO of the Forum, about the impact of its end and the unfolding effects of recent TPS terminations:
“The potential end of Temporary Protected Status for Salvadorans and recent end of protections for people from other countries underscore the need for an immigration solution for individuals who have built their lives in the United States. While we recognize the program’s intended temporary nature, there is an urgency for alternative solutions to address the challenges facing TPS recipients, who had lived for years —even decades— in the U.S. and had contributed to their communities.
“The lives disrupted when TPS is terminated go beyond TPS recipients. We are witnessing the loss of hundreds of thousands of workers from essential sectors of the economy, weakening the workforce and undermining economic growth. Just the upcoming expiration for El Salvador would mean the elimination of work authorization for an estimated 152,000 workers.”
